Dr. Aminul Islam has officially assumed the role of Director General (DG) at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) following a government appointment.

His arrival at the headquarters on Monday was marked by brief protests and a standoff at the main gate, though the situation was quickly resolved.

While a small group initially opposed his takeover, a large number of scientists, officials, and employees welcomed the new DG. Law enforcement agencies, including the Police and Ansar, intervened to ensure a peaceful transition and maintain administrative order.

The post of Director General had been vacant for nearly a month, causing a temporary lull in administrative and research activities. Dr. Aminul Islam, a veteran agricultural scientist who joined BRRI in 1998, emphasized his commitment to restoring the institute’s momentum.

"My goal is to fulfill this responsibility with transparency and dedication," Dr. Islam stated after taking office. "Implementing government decisions is a collective duty, and I expect everyone to work together to advance our ongoing research and projects."

The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Scientists' Association (BRRISA) highlighted the need for dialogue to resolve internal differences. General Secretary Dr. Habibur Rahman Mukul noted that while policy discussions are necessary, the professional environment and research activities must remain a top priority.

With nearly three decades of experience and a strong background in regional administrative leadership, Dr. Islam is expected to stabilize the institute. Given the global focus on food security, stakeholders believe a united BRRI is essential for Bangladesh's agricultural future.
