Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has stressed that public awareness is essential to solve waterlogging in Chattogram. “This city belongs to all of us. Without citizen awareness, waterlogging cannot be resolved,” he said.

The mayor made the remarks while inspecting the CCC’s month-long “Crash Program” to clean drains and sewers across different wards of the city.

During the visit, he noted that many drains and sewers have effectively turned into garbage dumps, contributing significantly to waterlogging. He blamed indiscriminate waste disposal by some and residents, warning that no initiative will succeed if such practices continue.

He urged every household and shop to use designated dustbins and dispose of waste properly. Expressing concern over the theft of dustbins, he called on local representatives and political leaders to act responsibly.

Highlighting the role of sanitation workers, the mayor described them as “silent warriors” and said improving their living conditions is a priority. He said a modern housing project is underway for sanitation workers.

Under the revised plan, the project cost has risen to Tk 309.35 crore from Tk 231.42 crore due to updated government rates and design changes. A building initially planned for Ward 21’s Bundle Colony will instead be constructed in Ward 30’s East Madarbari due to space constraints.

According to CCC sources, the project will build 1,036 flats in seven buildings, each around 600 square feet. The completion deadline has been extended to December 2027.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall on Monday caused waterlogging in several parts of the city, including the Probartak intersection, disrupting traffic and daily life. The mayor continued inspections during the rain, overseeing cleaning work and issuing directives to officials.

CCC officials and local leaders were present during the inspection.
