Nine days after the brutal killing of Julekha Begum (55) and her college-going daughter Tanha Akter Mim (19) in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur, police have unraveled the mystery behind the double murder. The victims’ paternal cousin, Parvez, has confessed to committing the crime, police confirmed.
Lakshmipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Akhtar Hossain disclosed the details during a press briefing held at his office on Friday (October 17) evening. The accused, Parvez, son of expatriate Abdul Karim from Sonapur Mahadhar village, has been sent to jail through court following his arrest.
According to police, Parvez returned from Saudi Arabia two months ago and was struggling financially. In a bid to steal gold ornaments from his maternal uncle’s house, he planned and executed the attack. On the day of the incident, Parvez went to his uncle’s house carrying a knife. After being welcomed with fruits by Julekha and Mim, he went upstairs with Mim, where she suddenly saw the knife and screamed. A scuffle followed, during which Parvez stabbed Mim multiple times, killing her on the spot.
He then tricked Julekha, telling her that Mim was calling her upstairs. As she climbed up, he hit her on the head with a metal plate and then struck her again with a table, killing her instantly.
After confirming both deaths, Parvez broke open a wardrobe and looted the family’s gold jewelry. He changed into his cousin Rabbi’s clothes to disguise himself, packed his blood-stained garments in a bag, and later dumped the bag into a nearby canal in Ramganj.
Police said Parvez left the house shortly before the Maghrib prayer and went to his in-laws’ home in Laxmipur after the murder.
The breakthrough came after a special team of the District Detective Branch (DB) arrested Parvez on Thursday (October 16) morning from Monir’s Garage in Dhaka’s Turag area. Following extensive interrogation, Parvez confessed to his involvement.
Earlier, the gruesome killings took place on the evening of October 9 at the victims’ home in Uttar Chandipur village under Chandipur Union (Ward-2). Police and army personnel visited the crime scene that night. So far, three suspects have been arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case. Police say the confession of Parvez has now confirmed the motive and resolved the mystery behind the tragic double murder.
