The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been accused of embezzling crores of taka against the engineers and officials of Lakshmipur Municipality. Based on this, the ACC has sent a letter seeking information on the assets of 39 people including the municipality's executive engineer Zulfiqar Hossain.

The matter was confirmed by the ACC's Chandpur district office on Tuesday (October 28).

It was informed at the time that a letter was sent from the Chandpur district office to the Lakshmipur Municipality Administrator on the 14th of this month regarding the provision of records/information (as per Section 19 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 and Rule 20 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Rules, 2007) regarding the investigation into the complaint.

The other accused officials include Tax Assessor Abdur Rahman, Deputy Assistant Engineers Shamsul Alam, Mohammad Ishaq, Draftsman ABM Ashraf Uddin and 39 others, including relatives of officials and employees of various departments.

On October 14, the letter signed by Deputy Assistant Director and Investigating Officer Kamrul Islam of the ACC's Chandpur District Office mentioned that crores of taka were embezzled from the Lakshmipur Municipality fund. In the interest of a fair investigation, if any name or khatian has been created based on the purchase and sale of any land, VT-house, plot, shop, flat and other properties in the name of 39 individuals, a copy of that information should be submitted to the ACC investigator.

Executive Engineer Zulfikar Hossain said, I am not aware of the matter. I have not received any letter.

Deputy Assistant Engineer Shamsul Alam said, they are asking for the submission of income tax return documents. We will submit it. We are cooperating with the investigating officer.

Lakshmipur Municipal Executive Officer Khan Mohammad Faravi said, I am not aware of the matter. No official letter has been received by me yet.

Deputy Assistant Director and Investigation Officer of Chandpur District Office Kamrul Islam said, the office has given me the responsibility of investigating based on specific allegations. Investigation is underway in this regard.

However, despite calling Lakshmipur Municipal Administrator Mohammad Jasim Uddin's mobile phone several times to find out, it was not possible to contact him.
