Youth Leader Rony Leads Canal Cleanup to Combat Waterlogging in Fatullah

To tackle persistent waterlogging and public suffering in Fatullah, Narayanganj, District Jubo Dal Member Secretary Moshiur Rahman Rony personally joined a canal cleaning drive at the Kailani Canal on Friday (October 17). The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the volunteer organization BD Clean.

Rony, along with party activists and volunteers, entered the canal himself to remove accumulated waste and debris that had blocked water flow for years. His proactive effort has earned widespread appreciation from locals.

According to party sources, the drive was launched as part of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s 31-point program. Under Rony’s leadership, nearly 3.5 kilometers of the Kailani Canal—responsible for draining water from two unions and parts of the city—were cleaned. The canal had become severely clogged due to indiscriminate dumping of household waste, causing severe waterlogging and public hardship during the rainy season.

Rony stated, “Following the directives of Tarique Rahman, we took this humanitarian initiative. The neglected Kailani Canal had caused severe flooding and increased mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya. We are working to ease people’s suffering.”

He further alleged that during the ruling Awami League’s tenure, local influential figures, including Shamim Osman, allowed the canal to become a garbage dump. “Every monsoon, there were showy clean-up drives, but no real solution was implemented,” Rony said.

With BD Clean’s support, heavy machinery was deployed to remove silt and waste. Rony affirmed that the cleanup operation will continue until the canal is fully functional and the area is free from waterlogging. Local resident Sohrab praised the initiative, saying, “If this canal becomes functional again, it will greatly reduce flooding, and we’ll finally get relief from long-term suffering.”

Among those present were: Advocate S.M. Mahmudul Haque Alamgir (President, Enayetnagar Union BNP), Arif Mondol (General Secretary, Kashipur Union BNP), Rozina Akhter (Vice President, District Mohila Dal), Salauddin Rana (Member Secretary, Fatullah Thana Jubo Dal), and other leaders from BNP, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal.
