Host nation Morocco kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 2-0 victory against Comoros on Sunday, though the win was marked by early tension and injury concerns.
Despite a sluggish start and a missed penalty under rainy conditions, the tournament favorites found their breakthrough in the second half. Goals from Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi eventually sealed the win for the Atlas Lions in the Group A encounter.
The victory was bittersweet as captain Romain Saiss was forced off the pitch in tears due to an injury just 18 minutes into the game. Coach Walid Regragui admitted to being dissatisfied with the first-half performance but praised his players for their second-half adjustments.
Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, will face a more significant challenge against Mali this coming Friday.
