The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 was observed in Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha on Monday (October 13) with the theme "Let’s Reduce Disaster Through Coordinated Efforts."
The event was jointly organized by the Upazila Administration and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Sadullapur. Activities included a rally, an awareness discussion session, and demonstrations focused on earthquake and fire safety preparedness.
A discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad conference room, where Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Mohammad Anik Islam provided valuable guidance on tackling various forms of disasters. He emphasized the need for preparedness and community involvement in reducing disaster risks.
Other key officials present included Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Moinul Haque, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Jasim Uddin, Investigation Officer of Sadullapur Police Station Mahmudul Hasan, Upazila Agriculture Officer Apurba Bhattacharya, and members of the local Fire Service team. Staff from various departments and representatives from print and electronic media also attended the event.
Speakers highlighted that since 1989, October 13 has been globally observed to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction, enhance preparedness, and minimize the impact of natural and man-made disasters.
The discussion further noted that due to its geographical location, Bangladesh remains one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, especially vulnerable to climate change-related hazards. In the past two decades alone, the country has experienced over 185 natural disasters, significantly affecting marginal communities in coastal regions.
Participants agreed that public awareness and readiness are critical in minimizing losses. Only through collective consciousness and preparedness can individuals protect themselves and their families from the impacts of future disasters.
