Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for firm resistance to any attempt to seize polling stations through force, saying such actions must be opposed within the framework of the law.
“If anyone tries to take control of polling centres using muscle power, they must be resisted,” he said. “If cases are filed over this, they can be filed in my name.”
Dr Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a Jamaat-e-Islami election rally held at the Jhalakathi Government School ground on Friday afternoon.
He said Jamaat does not want a Bangladesh where the dignity and safety of women are uncertain. “We want to build a country where mothers and sisters can live and move safely—at home and abroad, in workplaces and in educational institutions,” he said.
Referring to the July Movement, the Jamaat Ameer said the participation of young people was crucial in bringing political change. “Without the youth, it would not have been possible to remove fascism,” he said, adding that young people must remain active in future movements as well. “I want to hand over the responsibility of the country to the youth very soon.”
The rally was also addressed by Jamaat-e-Islami Central Assistant Secretary General Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal, Jamaat-nominated Jhalakathi-2 candidate Sheikh Neyamul Karim, Jhalakathi-1 candidate Dr Faizul Haque, Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Dr Mustafizur Rahman Iran, and AB Sramik Party Joint Coordinator Sheikh Jamal Hossain.
The meeting was chaired by District Jamaat Ameer Advocate Hafizur Rahman, while leaders from district and upazila levels also spoke.
A large number of party leaders and supporters attended the rally, filling the school ground.
