A Hatirjheel police ADC was brutally beaten in Dhaka following a car-related dispute.

An Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Hatirjheel Police was severely assaulted in Dhaka on Wednesday night following a dispute involving a private car. The officer sustained serious injuries and required 17 stitches. He is currently receiving treatment at United Hospital.

The injured officer, ADC Mahfuzzaman, serves in the Diplomatic Security Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Police said five people were arrested on Thursday during raids carried out after the incident. The identities of the arrestees have not yet been disclosed.

According to DMP spokesperson Md Talebur Rahman, a case has been filed with Hatirjheel Police Station against seven individuals. He said the attack took place near Police Plaza in Hatirjheel while Mahfuzzaman was returning home in his private car after duty. An argument reportedly broke out with the occupants of another vehicle over driving issues.

Hatirjheel Police chief Golam Mortuza said the attackers were businessmen who were intoxicated at the time. Police said the suspects had come from a nearby bar, blocked the ADC’s car, and called in additional people. Around 15 to 20 individuals then allegedly assaulted the officer.

Police are continuing the investigation and said further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
