Bus fares in Bangladesh have been increased by 17 paisa per kilometre following the recent hike in fuel prices.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on Tuesday (September 22).
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had earlier proposed raising fares by 20 paisa per kilometre for long-distance buses and 18 paisa for city buses.
The government increased the prices of all types of fuel by Tk20 per litre through a gazette notification issued on Sunday night (September 20). The new prices came into effect on Monday (September 21).
Before the latest increase, diesel was sold at Tk115 per litre, kerosene at Tk135, petrol at Tk140 and octane at Tk145. Under the new rates, diesel now costs Tk135 per litre, kerosene Tk155, petrol Tk160 and octane Tk165.
Before the latest fuel price hike, diesel prices had been increased by Tk15 per litre in April. At that time, bus fares were raised by 11 paisa per kilometre.
Until Tuesday’s decision, bus fares in the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas stood at Tk2.53 per kilometre, while the fare for minibuses was Tk2.42 per kilometre.
For long-distance routes, the fare for 52-seat buses had been set at Tk2.23 per kilometre following the April adjustment.
With the latest 17-paisa increase, the fares will now be revised accordingly.
