The month of Ramadan is a period of mercy, forgiveness, and spiritual growth. The Holy Quran was revealed during this month, Laylatul Qadr occurs, fasting is obligatory, and deeds are multiplied.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “When Ramadan comes, the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and Satan is chained.” (Misqatul Masabih) Scholars explain that this symbolizes Allah’s mercy, the acceptance of good deeds, and protection from sinful desires.
Yet, even with Satan chained, many people commit sins. Islamic philosopher Hazrat Muhiuddin Ibnul Arabi explained that human desires, bad habits, and corrupt inclinations can create ‘human devils’ more dangerous than Satan himself. These people lose conscience, judgment, and shame, committing crimes such as theft, corruption, oppression, and even murder. Allah warns in the Quran (Surah A’raf 7:179) that such people are worse than animals—heedless, disobedient, and blind to guidance.
In our society, examples abound. Cases of sexual abuse, rape by relatives, teachers, imams, and others have shocked the nation—even during Ramadan. Violent mobs attacking shrines, looting, and causing social unrest have also emerged, creating chaos and insecurity.
It is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant against these human devils. We must speak out against injustice, support legal action, and demand accountability. Social boycott of wrongdoers is also important, as the company of such people can mislead the righteous. As Islam teaches, choosing companions carefully is key: “Heaven with the righteous, destruction with the wicked.”
Every Muslim must be alert and conscious, protecting themselves and society from deception and harm. May Allah grant us guidance and strength to act justly. Ameen.
