With the football World Cup approaching, a familiar frenzy has gripped Bangladesh, sparking friendly rivalries and massive celebrations among Brazil and Argentina supporters across the country.
In Chatmohar upazila of Pabna, Argentine fans have taken their passion to new heights by crafting and displaying a massive 2,022-foot-long team flag. On Friday afternoon, hundreds of local supporters paraded the flag through Baludiyar village before hanging it along the main village road. Local organizers claim it is the longest Argentine flag made in Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming tournament.
The initiative was spearheaded by three local youths—Russell Mahmud, Selim Hossain, and Alamin Hossain. They planned the 2,022-foot flag both to honor Lionel Messi’s historic 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar and to rally support for the team's upcoming campaign.
What started as a small idea quickly gained community-wide backing. College teachers, students, farmers, and expatriates from Baludiyar village pooled together approximately 50,000 BDT to fund the project. Tailors worked for ten days to stitch the fabric before meticulously adding the official Argentine Football Association (AFA) logos.
"We have idolized Messi since childhood," said Russell Mahmud, one of the coordinators. "Watching him lift the trophy in that breathtaking 2022 final against France was unforgettable. We made this flag to show our unwavering support from thousands of miles away in Bangladesh. We want to see him lift the golden trophy once more."
The event has drawn visitors from neighboring areas, transcending strict team boundaries. Local Brazil fans even joined the gathering to appreciate the effort.
"We built this out of pure love for the sport," said local residents Siddiqur Rahman and Maharam Ali. "While we want Argentina to defend their title, we also wish Brazil the very best. Our ultimate dream is to see an aesthetic, thrilling grand final between Argentina and Brazil."
Visiting the venue, former chairman of Parshadanga Union Parishad, Rabiul Karim Tarek, praised the youths. "As an Argentina fan myself, I am proud to see their creativity. It’s wonderful to see the community unite over sports, provided the excitement remains peaceful and chaotic rivalries are avoided."
