The highest departmental action will be taken against the police officers involved in beating national cricket team player Nayeem Hasan, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Shawkat Ali said on Saturday.
Two police members—SI Shafiqul Islam and Constable Rashed—have already been suspended, and a departmental case will be filed against the entire operational team.
The CMP Commissioner visited Nayeem’s home in the Faridar Para area of Bahaddarhat on Saturday noon to express his regret. He spoke privately with the cricketer and met with his family members.
"I have heard the details from Nayeem Hasan," Commissioner Shawkat Ali told reporters. "The behavior of the duty officers was unprofessional. If any police officer acts unprofessionally, they must bear personal responsibility, and maximum punishment will be ensured."
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Strict action will follow its findings.
According to the Commissioner, the incident began when police stopped a CNG-powered autorickshaw based on a tip-off about illegal goods. However, he emphasized that police must remain professional during verifications, and the inquiry will determine exactly where the deviation occurred.
Regarding allegations that a police informant also beat Nayeem, the Commissioner confirmed that the individual has been arrested. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone committing crimes under the guise of police connection.
"Every citizen has the right to equal legal protection," the Commissioner added, reiterating that the Bangladesh Police does not tolerate unprofessional behavior or shelter members for personal misconduct.
The action follows an incident on Friday night in the city's Lalkhan Bazar area, where police officers—allegedly posing as Detective Branch (DB) personnel—detained and assaulted the national cricketer, sparking widespread public outrage online and in the media.
