A local Jubo Dal leader was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Rauzan upazila of Chattogram on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased, Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud, 45, was the senior joint convener of Rangunia Upazila Jubo Dal. He was the son of the late Khaled Chowdhury from the Betagi area.
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM in the Pahartali Chaumuhani area of the upazila.
Locals suspect the murder stems from a long-standing dispute over the local sand supply business. Masud was also reportedly preparing to run as a chairman candidate in the upcoming local government elections.
Upon receiving the information, police rushed to the scene. Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rauzan Police Station, confirmed the killing and stated that an investigation is underway. "We are working to identify and arrest those involved in the shooting," the OC said.
Following the news of the murder, aggrieved BNP and Jubo Dal activists blocked the Kaptai Road in the Ichakhali area by burning tires. The blockade temporarily halted vehicular movement as protestors demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers. Law enforcement personnel later deployed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
