


Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who is scheduled to retire on June 30, 2026. Lt Gen Seth will officially assume command on the afternoon of the same day.
Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune. He was commissioned into the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps in December 1986.
In a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades, Lt Gen Seth has acquired extensive experience across strategic, operational, and institutional domains. He has held several key command roles, including leading an armoured regiment in the desert sector, an armoured brigade on the western front, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir.
He is widely recognized for his leadership in force modernization, having played a central role in preparing the Indian Army for emerging technologies and future battlefield requirements.
