Candidates from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have emerged victorious with massive margins in the Bogura-6 by-election and Sherpur-3 general election held on Thursday, April 9.
While election officials described the voting process as peaceful, candidates from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have raised serious allegations of irregularities.
Bogura-6 By-Election Results
In Bogura-6—a seat vacated by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman after he chose to retain his Dhaka-17 constituency—Rezaul Karim Badsha secured a decisive win. Contesting with the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, Badsha polled 133,931 votes.
His closest competitor, Jamaat-backed candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, received 57,159 votes, while Md Al-Amin Talukder of the Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) trailed significantly with 499 votes. According to Returning Officer Md. Fazlul Karim, the voter turnout stood at 42.57%.
Sherpur-3 General Election Results
In Sherpur-3, where the election had been postponed following the death of a previous candidate, BNP’s Mahmudul Haque Rubel secured a landslide victory with 166,117 votes.
His rival, Masudur Rahman of Jamaat-e-Islami (contesting with the 'Daripalla' symbol), secured 47,051 votes. The voter turnout in this constituency was notably higher at 52.19%. Returning Officer Md Jahangir Hossain confirmed that the proceedings were largely orderly despite a few isolated incidents.
Despite the official declarations of peaceful polling, the Jamaat-e-Islami leadership has rejected the atmosphere of the election. They alleged widespread irregularities like assaults on polling agents, forcible occupation of polling centers also Ballot manipulation and attempts to falsify final counts.
The Election Commission, however, maintained that no centers were suspended and that the results reflect the legitimate exercise of voting rights by the constituents.
