A court has cancelled the bail of Md. Ibrahim Khalil, an Executive Engineer (Electricity) of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), and ordered him to be sent to prison.
The order was issued on Thursday after the engineer appeared in court to seek an extension of his bail in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to ACC Public Prosecutor Md. Kamal, the investigation found evidence of illegal assets worth over Tk 1.46 crore in Khalil’s name. Furthermore, investigators discovered unusual bank transactions totaling approximately Tk 8.71 crore, which were unrelated to his official salary and allowances.
A chargesheet has been filed against him under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act and the Penal Code. His wife, Monowara Begum, is also an accused in the same case for allegedly acquiring assets worth Tk 25.93 lakh beyond their known sources of income.
Despite the legal proceedings, the Local Government Department had already directed the GCC Chief Executive Officer in October 2025 to suspend and remove Ibrahim Khalil from his post.
However, allegations have surfaced that no effective administrative action was taken until his recent imprisonment, sparking criticism regarding the city corporation's internal accountability.
