A court in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur has sentenced Naser Thakur (30) to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a dowry dispute. He was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional one-year rigorous imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday (April 9) by Shamima Parveen, District and Sessions Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Faridpur. The accused was present in court and was later sent to Faridpur District Jail under police custody.
Naser Thakur is the son of Md. Kohel Thakur of Gadadhardi village in Madhukhali.
According to court documents, Naser had repeatedly demanded dowry from his wife after their marriage and often assaulted her when his demands were not met.
On March 21, 2016, he again beat his wife over dowry. At one stage, he strangled her using a veil inside their home, causing her death.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder case with Madhukhali Police Station. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet.
During the trial, the court heard witness testimonies and reviewed evidence, concluding that the charges were proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Rabbani said the verdict reflects the seriousness of dowry-related violence and serves as a warning against such crimes.
Prosecution lawyers expressed satisfaction, noting that the ruling reinforces legal action against violence against women.
