


A district court has sentenced a 35-year-old man Hossain Ali to life imprisonment for smuggling heroin. A second defendant 55-year-old Hiru Mia received a five-year rigorous prison term for his involvement.
Tangail District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict on Monday. Alongside his life sentence the court fined Hossain Tk 50,000 failure to pay will result in an additional year of rigorous imprisonment. Hossain is currently absconding after fleeing on bail while Hiru has been sent to the district jail to serve his sentence.
Public Prosecutor Shafiqul Islam Ripon confirmed that District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested the duo on January 22, 2025 near the Kalia Union Land Office in Sakhipur. During the raid, officers recovered 90 grams of heroin from Hossain and 10 grams from Hiru. Two other suspects managed to flee the scene.
Following the arrests DB Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman filed a case at the Sakhipur Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act. Formal charges were framed in October 2025 and the court reached its verdict after hearing testimonies from nine witnesses.
