A court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for strangling his wife to death over a dowry dispute in Faridpur Sadar upazila.
The convict, Shahin Mir Malat (34), was also fined Tk 50,000. In default of payment, he must serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment.
Judge Shamima Parveen of the Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon in the presence of the accused, who was later sent to district jail.
According to court records, Shahin married Smriti Akhter (22) in 2019. The couple had two children. Following the marriage, Shahin became addicted to drugs and began physically and mentally abusing Smriti for dowry. Although Smriti’s family paid Tk 1 lakh in 2021, Shahin continued the abuse, demanding an additional Tk 3 lakh.
On the night of January 28, 2022, Shahin strangled Smriti to death inside their home. He then left her body at the house gate and fled the scene.
Police recovered the body the following day after being alerted by locals and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The victim’s father, Faruk Matubbar, subsequently filed a murder case with the Kotwali Police Station. On April 30, 2022, Sub-Inspector Sujan Biswas submitted a charge sheet naming Shahin as the sole accused.
Expressing satisfaction with the ruling, Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan Ratan confirmed the verdict.
