A Faridpur court has sentenced a 54-year-old man to life imprisonment for beating his wife to death over a dowry demand nearly three years ago.
On Monday, Judge Shamima Parveen of the Faridpur Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused, Md. Lalon Molla. He was also fined Tk 20,000, facing an additional year in prison if he defaults on the payment.
According to case files, Lalon married Sajeda Begum in 2004. A drug addict, Lalon frequently tortured his wife to extract money from her family. When Sajeda failed to meet a fresh Tk 50,000 dowry demand, the abuse escalated. In the early hours of August 23, 2022, Lalon fatally struck Sajeda with a hammer at their home in the West Alipur area of Faridpur city.
The victim’s younger sister, Majeda Begum, filed a murder case with the Faridpur Kotwali Police Station later that day. Following a thorough investigation, police submitted the charge sheet in January 2024. The court ultimately found Lalon guilty based on the testimonies of 12 witnesses, the autopsy report, and material evidence.
Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan welcomed the verdict, stating it sets a firm legal precedent against dowry-related violence. The victim’s family also expressed satisfaction, sharing their relief at finally receiving justice.
