Six people including a patient and a driver were injured when a Dhaka-bound ambulance lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Jhalakathi on Monday morning.

The accident occurred in the Rayapur area of Nalchiti upazila on the Jhalakathi-Barishal regional highway. According to locals and police the private ambulance departed from the Palbari area of Jhalakathi town struck a roadside tree and then fell into the ditch.

The patient, Fazlul Haque sustained a broken leg. The other injured passengers were identified as his son Riazul Islam Sona (45) daughter-in-law Afroza Begum (40) son-in-law Mamun Hasan Lavlu (55), grandson Palak Hossain (22) and the ambulance driver.

According to the patient’s nephew Matin Rahman Fazlul was traveling to Dhaka for his regular monthly medical check-up.

Following the crash locals and police rescued the victims and transported them to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital. Fazlul was later sent to Dhaka in a separate ambulance while the remaining injured were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal for advanced treatment.

Nalchiti Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhiduzzaman Sohag confirmed the incident stating that efforts to recover the damaged ambulance are ongoing and routine legal procedures are underway.
