China Economic Zone to Transform South Chittagong’s Economy

The upcoming China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Anwara, Chittagong, is set to fundamentally transform the region’s economy Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced on Monday.

Speaking at the project's foundation stone laying ceremony in Belchura, the minister outlined the zone's massive economic footprint. While initial investments stand at $500 million, the total capital injection—including infrastructure—is projected to exceed $1 billion.

The development is expected to create over 100,000 jobs, directly supporting the government's broader national targets of achieving a trillion-dollar economy by 2034 and generating 10 million total jobs.

"The benefits of this economic zone will extend far beyond Anwara," the minister stated. "It will catalyze new industries, strengthen supply chains and boost housing, transportation, and logistics across the entirety of South Chittagong." He also highlighted the inclusion of dedicated worker accommodations as a vital and positive initiative.

The high-profile event was attended by several key dignitaries including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed State Minister for Land and Hill Affairs Mir Helal Uddin Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and BEZA Executive Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury alongside local lawmakers and foreign investors.
