Jaishankar announced that Indian visas for Bangladeshi citizens specifically for medical and business purposes will be eased in the coming weeks.

In the first high-level diplomatic mission since the new government took office, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman met with top Indian officials on Wednesday to stabilize and advance bilateral relations.

The visit signals a significant shift as both nations move toward "normalcy" based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Strengthening Energy and Food Security

During meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Bangladesh expressed gratitude for recent diesel shipments. Facing domestic demand, Dhaka requested an increased supply of diesel and fertilizers. Minister Puri responded positively, indicating that India would consider the request "readily and favourably."

Extradition Requests and Security

A major point of discussion involved the legal accountability of the previous administration. Dhaka reiterated its formal request for the extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both of whom face death penalties issued by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Furthermore, both sides agreed to follow extradition treaty procedures to return individuals suspected of killing Shaheed Osman Hadi, who were recently apprehended by Indian authorities.

Visa Easing and High-Level Visits

In a move to improve people-to-people ties, Minister Jaishankar announced that Indian visas for Bangladeshi citizens—specifically for medical and business purposes—will be eased in the coming weeks.

While a specific date has not been set, discussions are underway for an official visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already extended a formal invitation to the PM and his family, emphasizing that a "warm welcome" awaits them.

"Bangladesh First" Policy

Dr. Khalilur Rahman emphasized that the new BNP-led government will follow a "Bangladesh First" foreign policy. This approach aims to build partnerships based on the mutual trust and dignity, reciprocal benefits along with regional stability.

Following the New Delhi meetings, the Foreign Minister is expected to travel to Mauritius alongside Minister Jaishankar to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference, further signaling continued regional cooperation.
