The Energy Department has assured that there will be no shortage of petrol and octane in Bangladesh over the next two months.
Joint Secretary Monir Hossain Chowdhury shared the update at a press briefing on the country’s energy situation held at the Secretariat on Thursday (April 9).
He said the country currently has sufficient fuel reserves. Stock levels include 143,000 metric tons of diesel, 9,569 metric tons of octane, and 16,812 metric tons of petrol.
Authorities have also intensified operations against illegal fuel storage. So far, 469,042 liters of fuel have been recovered through 7,342 drives nationwide. The official warned that hoarding and excessive buying must stop to stabilize the situation.
The government continues to provide significant subsidies on fuel. Each month, subsidies range between Tk 2,000 crore and Tk 2,500 crore. Diesel is currently sold at Tk 100 per liter, although its actual cost is estimated at Tk 155—meaning a subsidy of Tk 55 per liter.
Regarding the fuel pass system, the Energy Department has begun pilot sales at two filling stations in Dhaka—Sonar Bangla Filling Station and Trust Filling Station in Asad Gate. The system will be introduced gradually across the country.
Monir Hossain Chowdhury also noted that global conflicts will continue to impact economies, including Bangladesh, even after they end. He said the government decided not to increase fuel prices in April to reduce pressure on citizens. Future price adjustments will depend on global conditions.
The government is also working to build fuel storage capacity for at least three months to improve energy security.
Additionally, consumer complaints regarding LPG pricing will be investigated.
