BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (November 6) stated a firm position on the timing of a proposed referendum, while also criticizing other political parties and the Consensus Commission.
Fakhrul declared that the referendum must be held on the same day as the national parliamentary election. He emphasized the party's consensus on this, saying, "No referendum will be allowed before the national election."
Speaking at a memorial meeting in Jashore, he accused "a few political parties" of attempting to "create instability with various demands" and trying to "disrupt and delay the election."
Fakhrul called upon all political parties not to "muddy the waters" or push the country toward instability, arguing that the nation now has an opportunity to return to a democratic system after a long struggle involving the loss of lives and numerous legal cases.
He accused the Consensus Commission of bias and questioned their belated call for political parties to sit together, suggesting the commission had not performed its duties properly despite the BNP consistently presenting its opinions to them.
