National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam stated on Wednesday that holding elections in Bangladesh is impossible without the implementation of the July Charter and a roadmap for genocide trials.
Speaking after a party meeting in Rangpur, he emphasized that while a swift election is desirable for stability, necessary reform work must be completed quickly first.
Islam called for national unity to tackle multifaceted crises and warned that no single party could govern alone without minimum consensus. He stressed that ignoring minimum demands for reform and justice would make any election unsustainable. Regarding political alliances, Islam noted public distrust of old parties, criticizing the past actions of the BNP and Jamaat after the July uprising.
He confirmed the NCP would only ally with parties closely aligned with the principles of the July Charter, justice, and reforms.
Supporting the first proposal of the Consensus Commission with minor amendments, demanding clarity on who will issue the July Charter order (recommending the interim government). Suggesting a referendum to empower the next parliament to create the "2026 reform constitution" criticizing the BNP for opposing major reforms within the Consensus Commission discussions.
