The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is strategically preparing for the upcoming general election by considering the selection of multiple or backup candidates for each constituency. This contingency plan is primarily aimed at mitigating risks, particularly the potential for nomination cancellations on legal grounds, which party leaders believe was a frequent issue during the previous Awami League regime.
A standing committee member, speaking anonymously, confirmed that having multiple candidates offers crucial "flexibility and strength" in each area, echoing a strategy the party employed during the 2018 general election.
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed announced the party's intention to form a "broader alliance" in the spirit of national unity, involving parties that participated in recent simultaneous movements and others, to "overcome the electoral hurdle."
The party's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, held extensive virtual joint meetings with nomination seekers from the Rajshahi, Barishal, Khulna, Sylhet, and Dhaka divisions. His central instruction to all leaders was to maintain a peaceful environment, avoid chaotic situations or celebrations after receiving tickets, and ensure party discipline to secure a smooth and successful electoral process.
Leaders quoted Tarique Rahman stressing the need for unity in the "battle against a black hole" (referring to the current political system). The core message is to set aside differences, as the party will have future opportunities for all leaders, and to work together for the success of the officially nominated candidate.
Tarique Rahman informed the Dhaka division aspirants that the final list of selected candidates will be announced "through a press note soon."
