National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossain asserted today that the party's unwavering focus on structural and constitutional reforms prevented the Consensus Commission talks from being prematurely dominated by electoral politics.
Speaking at a party coordination meeting in Shahbagh, Hossain claimed the NCP's insistence was crucial, arguing that prioritizing elections would have sidelined the reform agenda and hindered the nation's development.
He highlighted that political parties ultimately agreed to provide a legal basis for a public referendum to grant structural powers to the next parliament, demonstrating the incorporation of fundamental constitutional changes. Hossain stressed that the July Charter remains relevant due to the NCP's demands and urged the government to immediately clarify its legal foundation and implementation process. He warned that any attempt to reduce the Charter to a "mere symbolic document" would compel the NCP to mobilize public action.
Furthermore, Hossain criticized political parties perpetuating undemocratic practices and called on anti-fascist groups, including the BNP and Jamaat, to ensure that parties like the Awami League and National Party do not regain undue influence.
He concluded by urging party members to spread the NCP's vision for an equitable Bangladesh focused on citizens' welfare, social security, and dignity for working people.
