The government has increased bus fares by 11 paisa per kilometre, following a rise in fuel prices.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced the decision on Thursday (April 23) after a meeting with transport owners at the Secretariat.
He said the new fare will apply to long-distance routes, including Dhaka–Chittagong, as well as inter-district services. The revised rate will take effect from today.
The fare hike will apply only to diesel-powered buses. CNG-powered buses are not included in this adjustment. The minister added that fares may be reviewed again if fuel prices decrease. No decision has been made yet regarding rail or water transport fares.
At present, the government-fixed fare for long-distance buses is Tk 2.12 per kilometre, while the rate in Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas is Tk 2.42 per kilometre.
The decision comes after fuel prices were recently increased at the consumer level. Earlier, diesel rose from Tk 100 to Tk 115 per litre, octane from Tk 120 to Tk 140, petrol from Tk 116 to Tk 135, and kerosene from Tk 112 to Tk 130.
Transport owners had earlier called for a revision of fares in line with rising fuel costs.
