Despite growing health consciousness everyday processed snacks like popcorn nachos and chips carry severe hidden risks. Researchers warn that these popular treats—alongside processed meats and certain oat or wheat products—contain cancer-causing toxins.
A study by Rutgers University in New Jersey highlighted these dangers after observing 33 pregnant women. Researchers found a toxic chemical primarily linked to corn-based snacks in all their urine samples. This chemical poses a severe threat to unborn children a finding later confirmed through expanded research.
The culprit is mycotoxin a toxic compound produced by specific fungi. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) these fungi thrive on grains nuts dried fruits, and coffee beans. While manufacturing processes and preservatives kill the fungi, the dangerous mycotoxins remain completely intact.
Worryingly mycotoxins withstand high temperatures meaning frying or baking does not destroy them. Regular consumption can lead to poisoning in children and pregnant women severely weaken the immune system and increase cancer risks over time.
The warning extends well beyond corn snacks. Sausages bacon nuggets frozen foods breakfast cereals packaged donuts and some cookies can also expose consumers to these toxins. To protect public health and safeguard children researchers strongly advise removing these processed items from our daily diets.
