Prime Minister Tarique Rahman completed 10 high-level engagements on his first day at the 81st UN General Assembly with focusing on economic cooperation also the Rohingya crisis and regional diplomacy.
Speaking at a news briefing at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in New York the PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin outlined the Prime Minister’s busy schedule which covered bilateral, regional and multilateral discussions.
The day began with a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres followed by the opening of the UNGA General Debate. Rahman held bilateral meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Haitian Prime Minister, Bhutanese Prime Minister and the Vice President of the Maldives to strengthen trade, defense and regional partnerships.
Addressing the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, Rahman met with UNHCR officials and the UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, reiterating Bangladesh's push for safe and voluntary repatriation.
On the economic front the discussions with World Bank President Ajay Banga yielded support to shield Bangladesh from global energy shocks and boost youth employment. Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi delegation met with Meta representatives to discuss digital growth and platform security.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver his maiden address at the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
