Road Transport, Railways, and Water Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam clarified on Saturday that the recent bus fare adjustments apply only to diesel-powered vehicles. He warned that any gas-powered transport charging extra will face legal action.

Speaking at the BIWTA Annual Sports Competition-2026 in Mohammadpur, the Minister emphasized that fares are now directly linked to fuel costs. "If oil prices drop in the future, fares will decrease automatically without the need for further discussion," he stated.

Addressing the rationale behind the price hike, Minister Rabiul Alam denied any pressure from the IMF. He explained that the adjustment was a necessary government measure to curb smuggling and reduce the heavy burden of subsidies.

On the issue of urban traffic management, the Minister pledged to curb "auto-rickshaw violence" to restore order in the capital. He noted that the government plans to phase out auto-rickshaws from main roads in a gradual, step-by-step process.
