


Veteran politician Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is set to be sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh this evening.
The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 7:30 PM at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will administer the oath of office to the new head of state.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, cabinet members, foreign dignitaries and high-ranking civil and military officials are expected to attend the historic event.
The inauguration follows Thursday’s presidential election in parliament where Fakhrul the former secretary-general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory. He garnered 255 votes and comfortably defeating his sole rival Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed who received 88 votes as the candidate for the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party opposition alliance.
Out of the 349 lawmakers eligible to vote 343 participated in the special parliamentary session with six members absent. Following the vote count Election Commission issued an official gazette confirming Mirza Fakhrul's election under the Presidential Election Act of 1991.
Fakhrul assumes the presidency at a pivotal time, transitioning from a decades-long career in frontline politics to the nation's highest constitutional office.
