The United States is preparing to impose the "toughest sanctions in history" on Iran in a bid to apply maximum economic pressure and avoid broader military conflict.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the impending measures on Thursday, describing a "one-two punch" of a naval blockade and severe financial penalties designed to collapse the Iranian regime. Full details of the sanctions are expected next week.

The announcement follows President Donald Trump's threats of "unprecedented economic warfare" against any nation providing financial or operational support to Iran.

Global Economic Impact

The escalating tensions have pushed global oil prices to a three-week high. A nearly six-month conflict has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz a crucial waterway that previously handled 20% of the world's traded oil.

International Reactions

Iran: Tehran quickly condemned the threats. The Iranian foreign ministry labeled the sanctions "economic terrorism" and asserted they will not break the nation's resolve. Iranian officials claim the U.S. is using the conflict to distract from its own domestic economic challenges.

China: As the purchaser of over 80% of Iran's exported oil, China warned that pressure tactics will not resolve the crisis also urging a diplomatic solution instead. While Bessent hinted at pressuring China to comply that he stopped short of outlining direct penalties against Beijing.

While the U.S. administration faces heavy domestic pressure to stabilize fuel prices though the previous attempts at ceasefires in April and June quickly collapsed and the region highly volatile.
