A 58-year-old fisherman from Morelganj, Bagerhat, tragically lost his life in a severe storm while catching hilsa in the sea and leaving his impoverished family facing a deeply uncertain future.
The victim Jamal Howlader was the sole breadwinner for his family. He went missing on Tuesday after falling from a trawler while casting nets near the 'Salek Char' area. Despite frantic searches by his fellow crew members, he could not be immediately located. His lifeless body was eventually recovered entangled in a fishing net on Wednesday afternoon.
Following his funeral Jamal was buried at his family graveyard in Purba Amtoli village under Khaulia union on Wednesday night.
A victim of severe river erosion Jamal had lost his ancestral home and was living in the Purba Amtoli Guchchagram (cluster village). Driven by extreme poverty, he routinely risked his life at sea to provide for his wife with four daughters and one son. He had set sail on July 25 in a trawler owned by a local businessman Alam Akon.
His sudden death has plunged his family into profound distress. District National Fishermen's Association President Nazrul Islam confirmed the incident and alongside local leaders expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
Morelganj Upazila Fisheries Officer Ranjit Kumar assured the family of official support, stating "We are aware of this tragedy. Once the family contacts us and we will take the necessary steps to ensure they receive the government grants they are entitled to."
