Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the hospital after suffering a hip fracture from a fall at his home early Tuesday.
The 100-year-old statesman is being treated at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur. His office confirmed in a statement that he is expected to remain under observation and treatment for the next few weeks.
Mahathir is a towering figure in Southeast Asian politics, credited with driving Malaysia's rapid industrialization during his initial 22-year tenure from 1981 to 2003. He famously returned to power in 2018 at age 92, leading an opposition coalition to a historic victory, though that government collapsed within two years due to internal political strife.
The centenarian has faced several health challenges in recent years, including multiple heart bypass surgeries. He was most recently hospitalized for fatigue in July following celebrations for his 100th birthday.
