Russian forces launched a missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Saturday morning, resulting in one person killed and 11 people injured, according to city officials. The assault, which marked the second attack on the Ukrainian capital in four days (following a barrage that killed seven people on Tuesday), targeted multiple districts.
The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that strikes occurred at six different locations, hitting apartment buildings and other dwellings within the city.
The body of one resident was recovered from the rubble of an apartment building that caught fire, though a child was successfully rescued from the same structure.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a separate strike that triggered a fire on the lower floors of a high-rise apartment block located west of the city center.
Another fire started in a central district but was quickly brought under control.
The explosions and falling debris from the intercepted drones caused the fires and damage.
An air raid alert for incoming drones was re-issued in the capital after 5 a.m. (0300 GMT), and emergency crews were shown working across the city amidst damaged buildings and debris-strewn streets.
