The 79th Cannes Film Festival officially opened on the French Riviera Tuesday, transforming the coastal city into the heart of world cinema for the next 12 days.

Running from May 12 to May 23, this year’s edition prioritizes international auteur storytelling with a curated selection of 22 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or.

A Jury of Global Visionaries

South Korean maestro Park Chan-wook chairs the competition jury. He is joined by an international panel including Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Ruth Negga, and Stellan Skarsgård. This diverse group will deliberate on a lineup defined by bold directorial voices and formal experimentation.

Opening Highlights and Honorary Awards

The festival kicked off with the world premiere of Pierre Salvadori’s La Vénus Électrique (The Electric Kiss). Set in 1928 Paris, the film stars Pio Marmaï and Anaïs Demoustier in a tale of grief and artistic rediscovery.

In a moment of cinematic tribute, "The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson received an Honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony. A second honorary award will be presented to Barbra Streisand during the closing festivities on May 23.

Highly Anticipated Premieres

Several buzzworthy titles are set to debut: Minotaur: Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s first film since 2017, exploring the impact of military conscription on the Russian middle class.

Paper Tiger: A James Gray drama starring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller.

John Lennon: The Last Interview: A Steven Soderbergh documentary using AI-generated imagery and archival audio from Lennon’s final hours.

The Red Carpet Spectacle

Beyond the screenings, Cannes remains a global fashion powerhouse.

Despite strict dress codes, the Croisette is expected to host a steady stream of A-listers, including Kristen Stewart, Javier Bardem, Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett.

As the 12-day extravaganza unfolds, the blend of high-fashion glamour and serious artistic inquiry continues to define Cannes as cinema's premier event.
