The 24th edition of “My Language Film 1432”, the country’s largest festival of Bengali cinema, is being organised by the Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS), inspired by the legacy of the Language Movement and a long-standing commitment to Bengali films.
The festival will run from Tuesday, February 3, to Sunday, February 8, at the Student-Teacher Centre (TSC) premises of Dhaka University.
The opening ceremony was held on Tuesday at 5:00pm at the TSC grounds. Noted writer, film critic and film movement activist Moinuddin Khalid attended the event.
Speaking at the inauguration, DUFS General Secretary Sumanta Sarkar Arpan said that collective film viewing has declined in today’s mechanical urban life due to the rise of individual, screen-based entertainment.
“Cinema is a social medium. People still want to experience films together. Through this festival, we want to revive the culture of watching films on the big screen at TSC,” he said.
DUFS President Rehnuma Shahreen said the festival would reconnect audiences with the roots of Bengali cinema.
“From contemporary political narratives to timeless stories, the screens at TSC will come alive with the colours, songs and emotions of Bengali films,” she said.
She added that ticket prices have been fixed at Tk 50 to ensure students, teachers and the general public can easily attend.
A total of 19 full-length films and three short films will be screened. Except for the opening day, films will be shown daily in four slots: 10:00am, 12:30pm, 3:30pm and 6:30pm.
The festival will conclude 8TH February with a special screening curated by Jayabrata Das of Kolkata’s Academy of Fine Arts.
According to the organisers, around 400 tickets were sold on the opening day. In total, 23 films will be screened over six days.
