Former State Minister for Home Affairs and Netrokona-4 MP, Lutfuzzaman Babar, announced on Friday that government agricultural assistance will be strictly prioritized for sharecroppers and small farmers who directly suffered losses in the recent flash floods.
During an inspection of the damaged haor regions in Mohanganj, Babar clarified that individuals who merely rented out their land for profit will not receive aid, as they did not incur cultivation losses. "Only those who spent money to cultivate paddy and lost their crops will receive the government-announced assistance," he stated, adding that all small-scale farmers who cultivated their own land are also eligible.
Babar visited several affected areas, including Naogaon Pasukhali, Haripur, Jainpur, Gaglajor, and Barantar. He emphasized that the upazila administration and local BNP activists would collaborate to ensure an accurate list of victims. He noted that the initiative follows directives from Tarique Rahman to ensure aid reaches those truly in need based on fairness.
In Mohanganj upazila, Boro paddy was cultivated on 16,000 hectares this season. However, heavy rains and upstream hilly surges have submerged the majority of ripe and semi-ripe crops. Sharecroppers—those who farm others' land for a fee or a share of the crop—have emerged as the hardest-hit group in this disaster.
