A Dhaka court today, November 16, granted bail to popular actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother, Alisan Chowdhury, after they surrendered before the court. The siblings are facing a case filed by a plaintiff named Amirul Islam who accuses them of issuing threats and intimidation over a purported business deal.
The same court, led by Executive Magistrate Afroza Haque Tania, had initially issued arrest warrants against them after they failed to appear for a scheduled hearing on November 3. Following media reports of the warrants, the siblings surrendered and were granted bail after a hearing.
Plaintiff Amirul Islam alleges that Mehazabien persuaded him to become a partner in a new family business due to a long-standing acquaintance. He claims to have given her Tk 27 lakh in cash and via bKash. When the business failed to materialize, he repeatedly sought repayment. The complaint alleges that when he met them on March 16, the actress, her brother, and 4-5 unidentified individuals verbally abused him and threatened his life, warning him not to ask for the money again.
The lawyer for Mehazabien and her brother, Tuhin Hawladar, stated that the allegations are entirely baseless and fabricated.5 The defense claims the plaintiff has no prior acquaintance with the accused and that they have never met or communicated.
Before surrendering, Mehazabien posted on Facebook, expressing surprise at the "false and fabricated case." She asserted that she does not know the plaintiff, is not engaged in any business that could lead to legal complications, and claimed the matter is a "deliberately spread rumour."
