


A court has ordered the imprisonment of former Director General of Defence Intelligence (DGFI), Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, after multiple remand periods in the BNP activist Maqbul Hossain murder case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam rejected his bail petition and ordered him sent to jail on Monday (April 13). The information was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Ruknuzzaman of the prosecution division.
Police said the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him from the Mirpur area on the night of March 25. The following day, he was placed on a five-day remand in the Delwar murder case. He was later shown on remand for six days on March 31, three days on April 6, and another three days on April 9 in the Maqbul Hossain murder case, followed by a one-day remand.
After completing the latest remand, investigation officer DB Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin produced him before the court and sought his detention in jail custody.
Lawyers Morshed Hossain Shaheen and Nazrul Islam Pakhi appeared in court and applied for bail on behalf of the accused.
According to the case statement, on December 10, 2022, the BNP announced a one-point demand programme. Earlier, on December 7, Detective Branch officers raided the BNP’s Naya Paltan office, leading to clashes and vandalism. During the incident, BNP activist Maqbul Hossain was shot dead.
Later, on September 30, 2024, after a reported political shift following a mass uprising, Mahfuzur Rahman filed a case at Paltan Model Police Station against Sheikh Hasina and 256 others.
