The government has cancelled the contractual appointment of Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, effective immediately. In a concurrent move, Md. Mostaqur Rahman (FCMA) has been appointed as the 14th Governor of the central bank for a four-year term.
The Ministry of Finance issued two separate notifications on Wednesday (February 25), signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Abraul Hasan Majumder. The notice regarding Dr. Mansur stated that his remaining term, originating from his August 13, 2024 appointment, has been revoked in the "public interest."
The new Governor, Md. Mostaqur Rahman, is a prominent businessman, a member of the BGMEA, and the owner of Hira Sweater. His appointment is subject to the condition that he severs all professional ties with other institutions and organizations before joining.
The leadership transition sparked a sensation at the central bank headquarters on Wednesday. Dr. Mansur, who arrived for regular duties in the morning, reportedly left the premises shortly after news of his removal began circulating. When approached by reporters, he stated, "I have not resigned, but I heard about it in the news," declining further comment.
Dr. Mansur had taken office on August 13, 2024, following the resignation of former Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder after the change in government on August 5.
