NCP Convenor and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has strongly criticised the appointment process of the new Bangladesh Bank governor, describing it as “shameless and undemocratic.”
Speaking at a discussion held at the Krishibid Institute auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday (February 26), Nahid said the previous governor was removed due to mob pressure to make way for a businessman accused of loan default.
He said such a move went against the spirit and aspirations of the July Uprising. “This decision protects looters instead of ensuring justice for past financial plunder,” he added.
Nahid also expressed concern over delays in justice for victims of the July Uprising. He questioned the credibility of ongoing investigations, particularly after the removal of Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, and doubted whether justice for the victims of the July massacre would be delivered.
Warning of growing public frustration, Nahid said that without comprehensive reforms, parliamentary debate would lose relevance and political demands would shift to the streets. He said his party was preparing for such a situation.
Criticising political groups he said were exploiting the outcome of the July Uprising, Nahid remarked that students and ordinary citizens had made sacrifices for the movement, but various forces were now trying to benefit from it. He specifically accused the Awami League of using constitutional arguments to block necessary reforms.
