Mongla Port, Bangladesh's second-largest seaport, has achieved a series of historic milestones during the first half of the 2025-26 fiscal year. From July to December 2025, the port saw a surge in operational activity, driven by infrastructure improvements and strategic administrative initiatives.
A record 17,387 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) were handled across 28 container vessels.
The port welcomed 440 overseas commercial vessels, a record for a six-month period. A total of 5,244 imported cars arrived via 15 specialized vessels. Total cargo transport exceeded 6.37 million tonnes, consisting of 6,327,870 tonnes in imports and 42,671 tonnes in exports.
The port’s performance in the preceding fiscal year (2024-25) set a strong foundation for this current growth. During that period, the Mongla Port Authority (MPA) earned a record revenue of Taka 343.33 crore, resulting in a net profit of Taka 62.10 crore. This profit was remarkably 203.49% higher than the initial target set by the authority.
Dredging projects, particularly in the Mongla-Ghasiakhali channel, have allowed larger vessels to berth directly at the port jetty. Directives from Shipping Affairs Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain and Ministry officials have streamlined expansion efforts.
The formation of an Internal Business Development Standing Committee and regular stakeholder meetings with C&F agents and shipping lines have optimized operations.
Mongla Port remains a vital hub for the southwestern region, facilitating the import of essential goods like LPG, coal, and food grains, while boosting the export of jute, frozen foods, and ready-made garments. This growth continues to create employment for hundreds of thousands of people.
