Today (May 3), World Press Freedom Day is being observed across Bangladesh and worldwide through various programs. This year’s theme is “Shaping a Peaceful Future.”
The day highlights the importance of press freedom, protection of freedom of expression, and ensuring a safe environment for journalists. To mark the occasion, journalist associations, press clubs, and social and cultural organizations across the country have arranged discussions, rallies, and human chains.
Independent journalism is facing growing challenges globally. The rapid expansion of information technology has increased the spread of misinformation, rumors, and propaganda. Media professionals say responsible, objective, and investigative journalism is now more important than ever.
In 1991, UNESCO emphasized the need to protect press freedom. Later, in 1993, the United Nations declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. Since then, it has been observed worldwide every year.
Marking the day, Muksudpur Press Club President Md. Siru Mia said, “The media is a key pillar of the state. Without independent and impartial journalism, democracy cannot develop in a healthy way. Journalists play a vital role by exposing corruption, irregularities, and public suffering. Ensuring their safety, professional freedom, and access to information is essential.”
He added, “Rumors and misleading information are spreading rapidly through social media. In this situation, the media must maintain public trust by delivering accurate and objective news. The new generation of journalists must work with ethics, responsibility, and professionalism.”
Journalist leaders also called for strengthening conditions for independent journalism, ensuring the safety of media workers, and protecting freedom of expression across the country.
