Gopalganj joined the nationwide inauguration of the “Notun Kuri Sports-2026” program through colorful events and sporting activities aimed at encouraging youth participation in athletics and healthy recreation.

The opening ceremony was held on Saturday afternoon at the Gopalganj District Stadium, where balloons and pigeons were released to mark the occasion. Members of Parliament Selimuzzaman Selim, Dr. K.M. Babor, and S.M. Jilani formally inaugurated the event.

The ceremony was presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) S.M. Tarek Sultan. District Council Administrator and District BNP Convener Sharif Rafiquzzaman, along with leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations, were also present.

Speaking at the program, MP Dr. K.M. Babor highlighted the growing importance of sports as a professional career worldwide. He said many countries have successfully developed sports industries that generate significant economic opportunities. He encouraged parents to motivate their children to participate in sports, stating that regular involvement in athletics helps build a healthy and disciplined society.

MP S.M. Jilani emphasized the role of sports in steering young people away from drug abuse and excessive mobile phone addiction. He said initiatives have been taken to establish two playgrounds in every union to create better sporting opportunities for youths. According to him, families must remain vigilant and inspire children to engage in constructive activities such as sports.

Chief Guest MP Selimuzzaman Molla described sports as an essential tool for building a healthy, talented, and confident generation. He noted that sports should not be viewed only as entertainment or physical exercise, but also as a promising profession for skilled athletes. He said the nationwide launch of “Notun Kuri Sports-2026” reflects efforts to identify and nurture talented players aged between 12 and 14 years.

He also referred to several ongoing welfare initiatives and development commitments, adding that the original “Notun Kuri” concept was introduced during the presidency of Ziaur Rahman in 1980 and has now been revived with a renewed focus on youth development.

In Gopalganj, boys and girls aged 12 to 14 are participating in eight sporting disciplines, including football, cricket, kabaddi, athletics, chess, badminton, swimming, and martial arts. A total of six teams from different upazilas are competing in the tournament.

On the opening day, Muksudpur Upazila teams secured victories over Kashiani Upazila by 1-0 margins in both the boys’ and girls’ football matches.
