The United States will withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany, the US Secretary of Defense has ordered. A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the decision on Friday (May 1), according to Reuters.
In a statement, spokesperson Sean Parnell said the move follows a comprehensive review of US military presence in Europe and aligns with current regional needs.
He added that the withdrawal is expected to be completed within six to 12 months.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Washington was considering reducing its military presence in Germany amid disagreements within the NATO alliance and ongoing tensions related to Iran.
The decision comes at a time of strained relations between the United States and some European allies. Trump had recently warned of troop reductions following sharp exchanges with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Analysts say the move may also be linked to broader disputes over the Iran conflict and differing positions between the US and European countries.
