Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman will announce the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The party's nominee will be officially disclosed on Thursday (August 13) when nomination papers are submitted.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni shared this information on Tuesday afternoon following a meeting between the Election Commission Secretary and the Acting Speaker regarding the presidential election.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni noted that under Article 70 of the Constitution, Members of Parliament currently do not have the opportunity to vote against their own party in the election.
He clarified that the Election Commission will convene a meeting rather than a special parliamentary session to organize the vote.
Reaffirming the government's commitment, he added that the administration is fully dedicated to implementing the signed July Charter. Once the July Charter is implemented, MPs will have the freedom to vote independently in future presidential elections.
